Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim has hit back at club legend Wayne Rooney after the former captain labeled him “naïve” for stating that United’s goal remains to win the Premier League.
The Portuguese tactician, who watched his side crash out of the FA Cup on penalties to Fulham, insisted that the club’s long-term ambition will not change—regardless of their current struggles.

Speaking as a pundit on Match of the Day, Rooney—United’s all-time top scorer and a five-time Premier League champion—dismissed Amorim’s claim that the Red Devils are working towards reclaiming the title they last won in 2013.
“I think it’s a little naive to say they’re looking to win the Premier League because from where they are now, they’re a long way off that,” Rooney said.
“I think he’ll get time, but it’s not a free hit because he’ll expect more from Manchester United than what we’re seeing since he’s been in.”
“He says winning the Premier League—how can they compete? To get further up the table, I think that’s the next step for them.”
Rooney’s words carried weight, given his legendary status at Old Trafford.
However, his own managerial record—featuring short-lived spells at Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle—has been far from illustrious.
Amorim’s Defiant Response: “It’s Easy to Talk!”
In his post-match press conference, Amorim delivered a pointed response.
“That [winning the Premier League] is the goal. To be naive is to think we are going to do it this season or be the best contender next season.”
“I know in this moment, everybody knows everything. I was a pundit when I finished my playing career. I know it’s really easy.”
The 40-year-old, who was appointed in November, acknowledged the difficulties but remained firm..
“Our goal is to win the Premier League, maybe not with me, but as a club,” Amorim continued.
“The board wants to win the Premier League, just like the great glories and legends of this club did in the past. We are in a difficult moment.”
“And I’m not naive—that’s why I’m here, at 40 years old, coaching Manchester United.”
FA Cup Nightmare Piles Pressure on United

Amorim’s defiant stance came after another frustrating night at Old Trafford.
Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham following a dramatic penalty shootout.
Calvin Bassey’s first-half goal gave the visitors the lead before Bruno Fernandes equalized in the second half.
With the game ending 1-1, it was Bernd Leno who emerged as the hero in the shootout, saving spot-kicks from Victor Lindelöf and Joshua Zirkzee to send United crashing out.
The result means that United’s only realistic route to European football next season is through winning the Europa League.
They face Real Sociedad in the last 16, knowing that failure in that competition could leave them outside of Europe altogether—a disastrous scenario for a club of their stature.
What Next for United?
Amorim remains under pressure, with United’s inconsistent form raising questions about whether he will even last long enough to oversee their supposed title charge.
With 10 defeats in his first 24 games, including six losses at Old Trafford, the scrutiny is mounting.
