Could Wednesday’s international friendly against Nigeria’s Super Eagles be Cristiano Ronaldo ‘s final appearance on Portuguese soil?

As Portugal prepare for their final warm-up match before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this is a particular question that continues to hover over the Portuguese national team.

At 41 years old and preparing for a record-breaking sixth FIFA World Cup appearance, Ronaldo remains one of football’s greatest icons.

Yet with time inevitably catching up with even the sport’s most enduring stars, speculation has it that the clash against Nigeria in Leiria could be the last time Portuguese fans witness their captain playing for the national team at home.

However, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez insists neither Ronaldo nor the squad are thinking about farewells.

Ronaldo Only Focused on Improving – Coach Martinez

Speaking ahead of the friendly encounter against the Super Eagles, Martinez praised Ronaldo’s professionalism and commitment, insisting the veteran striker remains fully focused on helping Portugal succeed.

“Our captain sets an example in everything he does,” Martinez said of Ronaldo on Tuesday.

“He gives his all, 24 hours a day, to help the national team. Our captain and the rest of the players are not thinking about the future.”

“We don’t know what can happen in the future because they can get injured and there are decisions that are out of their hands.”

“The focus is on training, being the best, putting the concepts into practice and showing pride in wearing the shirt.”

“That’s the example he sets. His sole aim is to use it for tomorrow to improve.”

This explains the mentality that has allowed Ronaldo to remain among football’s elite more than two decades after making his senior international debut.

The Numbers Behind Ronaldo’s Extraordinary Legacy

Ronaldo’s impact on international football is unmatched.

The Al Nassr superstar, who recently added another Saudi Pro League title to his glittering collection of honours, made his Portugal debut in 2003 and has gone on to rewrite football history.

He enters the World Cup with an astonishing

  • 227 international appearances and
  • 143 goals for Portugal;

(both all-time records in men’s international football).

Despite approaching his 42nd birthday, Ronaldo has shown little indication that retirement is imminent.

Instead, he is preparing to chase the one major honour that has continued to elude him throughout his legendary career; the FIFA World Cup trophy.

Nigeria Clash Marks Final World Cup Rehearsal

Portugal’s encounter against Nigeria represents their final test before they begin their World Cup campaign.

Martinez revealed that he intends to rotate heavily during the match to ensure every player gains valuable minutes before the tournament.

“The idea is to make eleven substitutions and try to ensure everyone gets some playing time,” Martinez said.

“For five or six of our players it will be their first game. The focus is still on the individual and to give minutes to those that need it.”

“Our number one priority is to get the players on the plane ready for the World Cup.

“Portugal’s strength lies in everyone’s commitment.”

“The responsibility is to prepare the players to help the team. To use their talent to win.”

The approach highlights Portugal’s desire to arrive at the World Cup in peak condition, with Martinez keen to avoid injuries while also fine-tuning his tactical setup.

Why Nigeria Will Be a Perfect Test

While the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Martinez believes Nigeria possess enough quality and physicality to provide his side with exactly the type of challenge they need before facing African opposition at the tournament.

Portugal have been drawn alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo in the group stage and Martinez sees similarities that could prove valuable in preparation.

“We have an opportunity to work on aspects that are similar to what we’ll face against Congo,” he said.

“It’s a different African side. It will be a demanding opponent, who will be a test to prepare our squad.”

The fixture therefore carries significant importance beyond being just another friendly, as Portugal seek to sharpen their tactical plans ahead of the competition.

Portugal travel to North America boasting one of the most talented squads in world football, with established stars and emerging talents combining to form one of the tournament’s strongest contenders.

Yet Martinez believes success will depend on finding the right balance between structure and individual brilliance.

One More Home Night for Ronaldo?

Whether or not this will ultimately be Ronaldo’s final appearance in front of Portuguese supporters remains unknown.

Neither the player nor the Portuguese Football Federation has suggested retirement is imminent.

However, with the legendary forward preparing for what will be his sixth World Cup and another chapter in an already unparalleled international career, emotions are expected to run high in Leiria.

For Ronaldo, it may simply be another game.

Or perhaps, as many Portuguese fans fear, one last homecoming before the curtain eventually falls on one of football’s greatest-ever careers.
