After two decades, seven major trophies, and 349 appearances in Liverpool red, Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to bid farewell to Anfield — not for another Premier League rival, but for the bright lights of the Santiago Bernabéu.
The 26-year-old full-back has opted not to renew his expiring contract, turning down a lucrative extension that would have placed him among the highest-paid defenders in the world. Instead, he’s chosen a new chapter — one that will reportedly see him join Real Madrid on a five-year deal, reuniting with England teammate Jude Bellingham.
Trent Bids Liverpool Farewell
“It’s not an easy decision,” Alexander-Arnold said in a heartfelt farewell statement.
“I’ve loved every single minute of being part of this club. But I feel it’s time for a new challenge — for me as a player and as a person.”
His decision marks a seismic shift at Liverpool, not just because of what he brought to the pitch — unmatched creativity from right-back, tactical versatility, and a leadership role as vice-captain — but because of what he symbolized: a local lad who became a global star.
A product of the club’s academy since the age of six, Alexander-Arnold became the face of Liverpool’s modern golden era, winning the Premier League twice, a Champions League, and other major honours under Jürgen Klopp.
His departure now signals both the end of Klopp’s reign and the start of a major rebuilding effort under incoming manager Arne Slot.
Though negotiations were described as respectful and positive, Liverpool had been aware for months that their homegrown star was leaning toward the exit. He formally informed the club of his decision last month.
On social media, Alexander-Arnold shared a message filled with gratitude: “You guys have been there from the start. I’ve felt the love. I hope I’ve made you proud.”
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the inevitable: “Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, here we go! Documents are being prepared, verbal agreement in place.”
