Fenerbahçe manager Jose Mourinho has been hit with a four-match suspension and a 1.6 million Turkish lira ($44,000) fine by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) following his controversial remarks about refereeing in Turkey.
The 62-year-old Portuguese coach was punished for what the TFF described as “derogatory and offensive statements” after Fenerbahçe’s 0-0 draw against Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig on Monday.
“The performance of the referee was a top performance,” Mourinho said in his post-match press conference.
“Anyone, not just from this country but also abroad, watched a big football match. I think the man responsible for that was the referee.”
Mourinho’s praise, however, was directed at Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic, who was brought in after both clubs requested a foreign official instead of a Turkish referee.
His comments, which implied a lack of trust in local officials, did not sit well with the TFF.
Accusations of Promoting Disorder and Violence
According to the TFF, Mourinho’s comments violated sports ethics, promoted violence and disorder, and could potentially incite fan incidents.
In particular, the federation took issue with Mourinho’s remarks regarding a first-half incident involving his young defender, Yusuf Akcicek.
“Again, I have to thank the referee because with a Turkish referee, after the big dive and the first minute and their bench jumping like monkeys on top of the kids, a Turkish referee would have given Akcicek a yellow card after one minute, and after five minutes I would have to change him.”
Galatasaray immediately responded by announcing they would report Mourinho to FIFA and UEFA, as well as initiate criminal proceedings, accusing him of making racist statements.
Fenerbahçe Defends Mourinho, Calls Accusations “Baseless”
Fenerbahçe was quick to defend their manager, issuing a statement condemning the “deliberate distortion” of his words.
“His comments were taken out of context and deliberately misinterpreted,” the club said.
“We will take legal action against this baseless accusation.”
The controversy marks yet another disciplinary issue for Mourinho, who has previously been fined and suspended for his criticism of Turkish match officials.
Mourinho vs. Turkish Football Authorities – A New Rivalry?
Mourinho’s arrival in Turkey was met with huge fanfare, but his outspoken nature is already causing friction with the football authorities and rival clubs.
With Galatasaray pushing for further sanctions and Fenerbahçe standing firmly behind their coach, this latest controversy could deepen the divide in an already heated Turkish football landscape.
