Liverpool FC v Bayern Muenchen - Pre-Season Friendly

According to reports, the Bavarian giants might be willing to splash the cash for the Dutch international.

The unending international break has produced some more transfer nonsense, this time concerning Cody Gakpo. According to reports out of Spain, a country where none of Liverpool, Bayern Munich, nor Gakpo reside, Die Rotten are planning a £74 million (€90 million) swoop of Gakpo.

There are a lot of reasons to be skeptical of this rumor, including the source.

Regardless of the fates of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool will already have a big rebuild ahead of them this summer. In addition to a new right back, the club will also likely be looking into bringing in a new left back, possibly a new center back, and maybe even an attacker or two.

Gakpo has arguably been the club’s second best attacker this season behind Salah, and at 25-years-old, is still in his prime. Even if Liverpool choose to sell him for a significant fee, there is little guarantee that Gakpo’s goals and consistency could be easily replaced. Regardless of whether Salah stays at Liverpool, Gakpo will be a vital player over the next several years if The Reds wish to continue competing for top honors.

Moreover, Bayern don’t typically spend that kind of money on players, Harry Kane’s €110 million signing notwithstanding.

So, take this one with a rather large grain of salt.
