Uli Hoeness was spikey with German media when asked about the Wirtz transfer situation, confirming Liverpool’s serious interest.
The Florian Wirtz transfer saga just got more interesting from a Liverpool perspective.
The assumption in Germany and beyond is that Bayern Munich had the inside track to signing the exciting 22-year-old German attacking midfielder, as is their wont to do with Germany’s biggest and brightest talents.
However, over the last week, various reports have linked Wirtz with a move to England, first with Manchester City, and then with Liverpool.
And now, Bayern Munich director Uli Hoeness confirmed that not only are Liverpool a serious contender for Wirtz’s signature, but that he has met with the Merseysiders.
“What can I tell you now?” Hoeness admitted in frustration, “You’ve been writing nonsense for weeks about him going to Manchester City, even though he was at Liverpool.
“We’ll provide you with facts at some point, not more speculation!”
Bayer Leverkusen have reportedly asked for a whooping €150 million (£126 million) for the rising German star, a price that has made Bayern balk.
Although the fee would represent a record signing for Liverpool, FSG have repeatedly shown a willingness to pay the premium for players that they consider to be game changers, such as paying record fees for Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker. The fee is also in the same ballpark as the £111 million they offered for Moises Caicedo.
Despite Hoeness’s comments, Bayern are still probably in the driver’s seat, all things considered. However, Liverpool have apparently put themselves into the conversation, and Wirtz could be a very exciting signing for Arne Slot’s Liverpool.
